Boulder’s ‘Falling Bear’ killed in traffic accident

The bear who was photographed falling from a tree on the University of Colorado campus was killed last Thursday after a traffic accident involving two cars.

A photograph of the bear went viral last week when he wondered on the Boulder college campus looking for food. The bear was caught on camera falling from a tree after wildlife officials tranquilized him in an effort to remove him from the campus. After the bear recovered, he was tagged and taken to a wilderness area least 50 miles from the campus.

But distance won’t stop a bear, and he made his way back to the Boulder campus on U.S. 36 when he was struck by two cars.

First the driver of a Toyota Camry, Hugo Silva-Arellano, 31, ran into the bear around 5:40 a.m. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and damage to his vehicle.

Then a second man hit the bear. Kale Broeder, 22, said that he was in the right lane of U.S. 36 with a group of cars when he saw a driver put on their hazard lights and pull over to the right, Broeder then went into the left lane where he struck the bear. Broeder said the bear was in the middle of the road.

Broeder’s car was totaled after the collision with the 280 lb. black bear. Both men will find that an accident attorney will be able to negotiate with insurance companies to make sure they get the money needed to repair their vehicles.
