Maurice Sendak, a popular children’s book illustrator and author perhaps best known for the hit classic Where the Wild Things Are, died this week from complications of a stroke he suffered last Friday. A rep for Sendak says the 83-year-old passed away at his home in Connecticut around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Sendak began his career illustrating books in the late 40s. He soon began writing and illustrating his own books and published his first, Kenny’s Window, in 1956. Sendak wrote three other books before publishing Where the Wild Things Are in 1963. The book was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1964 and was adapted into a movie by Spike Jonze in 2009. Sendak’s other work includes In the Night Kitchen, Seven Little Monsters and Outside Over There. His last book, Bumble-Ardy, was published in 2011.
When he was not writing and drawing, Sendak designed sets for TV shows, plays, operas and ballets. He lived with his companion, psychoanalyst Eugene Glynn, for 50 years before Glynn died in 2007.
