Thomas Kinkade died of an overdose of alcohol and Valium, a California medical examiner has determined.
"Mr. Kinkade died of respiratory depression as a result of a high concentration of ethanol combined with benzodiazepine use," says the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's autopsy report.
The manner of death is listed as “accidental.” Kinkade, who had a history of alcohol abuse, was found dead in his Monte Sereno, California home on April 6 at the age of 54. He is survived by his estranged wife, Nanette, and their four daughters.
The self-described "painter of light” is known for his landscapes and Bible scenes. Although art critics have often slammed his work as “kitsch,” Kinkade won numerous awards from the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers and reportedly averaged $100 million in sales each year.
