Police arrest Yale student responsible for fatal Connecticut tailgate crash

Police have arrested the 21 year-old man responsible for the death of a woman at the tailgating area of a Yale-Harvard game in 2011.

The man, Brendan D. Ross of O’Fallon, Missouri, was charged with negligent homicide with a vehicle and reckless driving. He turned himself into New Haven police last Friday.

Police say that Ross was driving a rented U-Haul truck, carrying kegs to his fraternity brothers when he lost control of his vehicle. Witnesses observed the truck round a corner and begin to speed up. He struck 31 year-old Nancy Barry of Salem, Massachusetts, fatally injuring her.

Two other women were also injured. One of the women, Sarah Short hired an accident attorney and is suing Ross and U-Haul for $15,000, claiming “severe and deep bone bruising,” a fracture, and skin loss. Elizabeth Dernbach, 23, an employee at Harvard was the other injured woman.

Ross alleges that an equipment malfunction caused the accident.

Since the accident, Yale has altered their tailgating rules, barring large trucks unless driven by a vendor, banning kegs at the tailgate parties and creating a vehicle free tailgating area.
