NHL scores and highlights from Wednesday
The Ottawa Senators (7-10-1) went into Buffalo (15-2-1) and handed the Sabres their second home loss of the season after scoring three goals in the third period to win 4-2. Jason Spezza scored the equalizer in the third period on a power play goal and Peter Schaefer gave the Senators the lead six minutes later.
Rod Brind'Amour scored the go-ahead goal with just over six minutes remaining in the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes (10-7-3) beat the NY Rangers (10-8-1) 2-1. Cam Ward stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Jaromir Jagr scored the lone goal for the Rangers.
Patrice Bergeron scored the game winning goal for Boston (6-6-3) in their shootout with the Washington Capitols (8-5-5) 3-2. The Bruins jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period before surrendering a shorthanded goal to Matt Pettinger and a power play goal to Dainius Zubrus.
David Legwand scored two of Nashville’s (11-4-1) three third period goals and the Predators beat the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-10-1) 5-4. Legwand scored the game tying goal in the third period and Scott Nichol netted the go-ahead goal for Nashville. Rick Nash had had two goals and an assist for the Blue Jackets.
Sheldon Souray scored two power play goals for Montreal (10-4-3) and Cristobal Huet stopped 29 shots as the Canadiens beat the Tampa Bay Lightning (9-8-1) 3-1. Guillaume Latendresse added aMontreal’s third power play goal in the third period to secure the win.
Rick DiPietro recorded his first shutout of the season for NY (8-6-2) and the Islanders beat the Dallas Stars (12-5-0) 3-0. The Islanders got goals from Mike York, Jason Blake, and Trent Hunter in the road win. Dallas out-shot NY 35-22 but failed to find the back of the net.
Despite being out-shot 43-26 the San Jose Sharks (14-6-0) beat the Colorado Avalanche (7-9-2) 4-3. Evgeni Nabokov had 40 saves in the Sharks win and got a third period power play goal from Joe Thornton to tie the game at 3-3. Patrick Marleau then scored the go-ahead goal on a power play to give the Sharks the win.
The Philadelphia Flyers (4-12-2) pounded the Anaheim Ducks (13-2-4) 7-4. Philadelphia could only manage 16 shots but 7 of them were goals. Simon Gagne had a goal and an assist and the Flyers jumped on the Ducks for five goals in the first period. Anaheim had 41 shots on goal but Robert Esche stopped 37 of those shots.
