Tom Gabel, the lead singer of the punk band Against Me!, tells Rolling Stone in its new issue that he is transgender and plans to begin hormone and electrolysis treatments to transition into living as a woman. Revealing that he has suffered from “gender dysphoria” for many years, Gabel says he will eventually change his name to Laura Jane Grace. The 31-year-old will remain married to wife Heather. They have a 2-year-old daughter.
"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she's been super-amazing and understanding,” Gabel says of Heather.
"I'm going to have embarrassing moments, and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind,” says the rocker.
Gabel’s full interview is featured in the next issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands May 11.
Against Me! has released five albums, the latest being 2010’s White Crosses. The album peaked at #34 on the Billboard 200.
