Former U.S. President Bill Clinton made an unannounced visit to North Korea on Tuesday to meet with the country’s leader Kim Jong-il and discuss securing the freedom of two American journalists who have been detained since March.
Laura Ling and Euna Lee were arrested on March 17 after North Korean border guards caught the women illegally entering the country. Following a brief trial in June the two were sentenced to 12 years in prison for “hostile acts” and illegal entry.
Shortly after their sentence was hand down Ling and Lee admitted their guilt, acknowledging that they had been working on a report for the California-based Current TV. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appealed for amnesty in the case but the North Korean government refused to release the journalists.
The former President Clinton is said to be acting in a private matter and has not been sent by the White House administration. According to White House spokesman Robert Gates, “While this solely private mission to secure the release of two Americans is on the ground, we will have no comment.”
Despite the distance placed between the White House and Clinton there are many who believe the former president has the support of President Barack Obama. According to North Korean state media Clinton actually delivered a personal message from Obama but that has been denied by the White House.
It is believed that North Korea will now release the two journalists after building a large amount of propaganda to support their cause.
