Moped driver killed in Downtown Charleston traffic accident

Charleston police said that a man driving a moped was killed when a heavy work truck collided with his vehicle.

The incident took place Tuesday evening, shortly after 6 p.m., when a moped, traveling northbound on King Street approached the intersection at Line Street. A work truck, making a left turn onto Line Street, ran over the moped driver.

The moped driver, Gary Russell Stephens, 57, was rushed to MUSC where he died of his injuries.

The driver of the truck, Juan Francisco, was charged with numerous traffic violations, including failure to yield the right of way, not having a South Carolina driver’s license, and operation an unregistered motor vehicle.

Police are still investigating the accident, but driver negligence appears to be the cause.
