The undercover agent who foiled al Qaeda’s bomb plot posed as the suicide attacker willing to carry out the plan, according to new reports. The agent, who worked closely with the CIA and Saudi Arabia’s intelligence agency, transported the bomb out of Yemen and handed it over to the CIA in another country. The device is now being examined by FBI experts in Quantico, Virginia.
The bomb was intended to be detonated on a U.S.-bound plane sometime this month. It is said to be an updated version of the underwear bomb Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to detonate on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on December 25, 2009. That bomb failed and the Nigeria native was arrested.
Officials say the undercover agent is safe and is currently being debriefed. In addition to stopping a suicide attack, the operation led to a drone strike in Yemen that killed top al Qaeda operative Fahd Mohammed Ahmed Quso.
