Nancy Pelosi became the first woman to be elected Speaker of the House when Democrats unanimously voted the Representative from California to hold the post. Pelosi will officially assume her new role in January, succeeding Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
The recent elections for the House and Senate gave the Democrats the majority in each body of the government. Pelosi’s position as House speaker constitutionally places her second in line of succession to the presidency.
