The seven North Carolina men arrested and charged with plotting terrorist attacks have spent the day in court, facing a detention hearing to determine whether the U.S. can continue holding them as they await trial.
All seven men, including accused ringleader Daniel Boyd, are facing charges of conspiring to kill, kidnap and maim. According to the indictment the men had been plotting attacks in Israel and Jordan but had never actually carried out any terrorist attack.
Boyd, 39, has been accused of organizing and training the other suspects, two of which are his own sons, and raising money to carry out the overseas operations. Prosecutors have said Boyd engaged in extensive training in Pakistan and Afghanistan and was preparing to launch violent jihad abroad.
Authorities have said they are still searching for an eighth suspect, Jude Kenan Mohammad, who was arrested in Pakistan in October 2008 but fled after being granted bail.
