Chinese Police to Charge 83 People in Connection with Last Month’s Ethnic Riots in Xinjiang

Chinese police have said 83 people will be facing charges including murder and arson following last month’s ethnic riots involving Muslim Uighurs and China’s dominant Han group in Xinjiang that left nearly 200 dead.

According to Utiku'er Abudrehman, chief prosecutor of Urumqi city, “Those arrested will face charges of murder, intentional injury, arson and robbery.” State media reports have said there are 718 people being detained; a significant drop from an earlier report that indicated more than 1,500 had been arrested.

There has been no trial dates set for the group of 83 people facing the most serious charges. It has been reported that the majority of those killed in the violence were Han Chinese.
