The Advantages of Invisalign Braces

Some people who have braces are proud of them and want them to be seen. They're a fashion statement. Some folks with the money actually have their braces made out of gold, or set with gemstones. There are even people who have braces made to glow in the dark! Yet, other people don’t want their braces to be seen for various reasons. They might think braces are unsightly, or they’re grown-ups and feel that braces are for kids. Some people don’t want the attention that the braces will draw to them. These are folks who might go for an orthodontic technology called Invisalign.

Invisalign works by using a series of aligners that have been made specifically for the patient. They are trays of nearly invisible plastic that are always comfortable because they are custom made. Over time, incrementally and painlessly, they straighten the teeth. The patient just inserts a new set of aligners every two weeks or so, till the results the patient and the orthodontist have planned are achieved.

Some of the advantages Invisalign have over traditional metal braces are obvious. For one, no one but the patient and the orthodontist needs to know that the patient is using Invisalign. There are also no wires or brackets to adjust. The person can also eat whatever they wish to eat, which is not true of people who use metal braces. People who use metal braces must be careful not to eat things that can become stuck in their braces. They also can’t take their braces in and out when they want to like people who use Invisalign, and have to take extreme care while brushing and flossing their teeth. This is to make sure that their teeth and gums are completely clean, despite the braces. Patients who use Invisalign also don't have to worry about the aligner's material irritating the inside of their mouths, as metal braces can do.

Before the treatment, the patient should visit a few orthodontists who are Invisalign providers and know how to guide a patient through the Invisalign process. They can determine if the patient is a good candidate for Invisalign and they can also discuss the cost of the treatment.

The dentist will then take impressions and X-rays of the patient’s teeth and Invisalign lab technicians will then create a 3D digital picture of them. The dentist will use this picture to formulate a treatment plan that lets them and their patient know exactly how their teeth will move during the treatment. Then, the aligners will be made. The patient wears them all day but takes them out when they eat or brush their teeth. The patient puts in new aligners every two weeks or so and has a checkup with their dentist about every month and half to check their progress. Gradually, their teeth will move into alignment. For adults this takes about a year and with teenagers it might take a bit longer, or about the same time that it takes when traditional braces are worn.
