Johan Santana, the southpaw ace from the Minnesota Twins, picked up his second Cy Young Award in three years today. Receiving all 28 first-place votes Santana equaled the unanimous vote that he received in 2004.
The Baseball Writers of America Association had little trouble casting their ballot this year. Santana tied for the major league lead in wins (19) and led the American League in ERA (2.77) and strikeouts (245). Santana also led the AL in innings pitched, logging 233 2/3 for the Twins.
Santana becomes just the fourth pitcher to win the Cy Young Award by unanimous vote twice. He joins Sandy Koufax, Roger Clemens, and Pedro Martinez in the exclusive club. Koufax managed to achieve the accomplishment three times.
Chien-Ming Wang picked up 15 second-place votes to place the Yankee second in the running, while the Toronto Blue Jay’s ace Roy Halladay finished third.
