The manhunt for Adam Mayes, the Tennessee man suspected abducting two young girls after murdering their mother and older sister on April 27, ended yesterday in Mississippi. The FBI confirms a tip led to them to the woods where Mayes, 35, was hiding with Alexandria Bain, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, 8. Mayes shot himself in the head as officers approached and the Bain sisters looked on from where they lay face down on the ground.
Alexandria and Kyliyah were dehydrated and scared, but otherwise in good condition. "They were hungry and thirsty. They gave them water, and we drove them out right away,” said FBI spokesman Jason Pack.
The girls were taken by ambulance to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. They were treated and released “somewhere between 2 and 5 a.m.,” according to a hospital spokesperson.
Mayes was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. His death came one day after the FBI added him to their 10 Most Wanted list. Mayes was accused of killing Jo Ann Bain and her eldest daughter, Adrienne, 14, and burying them in a shallow grave. He then went on the run with Alexandria and Kyliyah, Jo Ann’s youngest daughters.
Mayes and his wife, Teresa, were both charged with first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. Teresa reportedly told police she witnessed Mayes killing Jo Ann and Adrienne. Mayes’ mother Mary has been charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping.
Family members say Mayes believed Alexandria and Kyliyah were his daughters. He was connected to the Bain family through his sister Pamela. Pamela was previously married to Jo Ann’s husband, Gary Bain.
