Peter Gabriel has been bestowed with the “Man of Peace” award from the Gorbachev Foundation.
The foundation is headed by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
As a musician Peter Gabriel started the band Genesis along with Phil Collins. Gabriel has gone on to create an incredible successful solo career with many of his songs appearing in movies and pop culture media.
While Gabriel has enjoyed world wide fame for his music, his “Man of Peace” award recognizes his involvement in promoting human rights and world peace. Many of his songs infuse a blend of these ideals. “Biko” was one such song detailing the life of Stephen Biko and his death in South Africa’s apartheid era.
Bob Geldof, the organizer of Live 8, and Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens have been past recipients of the award.
