Nepalese authorities confirm a small airplane crashed near an airport in a mountainous area of the country on Monday, killing 15 passengers. The Dornier 228, operated by Agni Air, was carrying 19 passengers and 3 crew members from Pokhara to Jomsom, a town about 125 miles northwest of Kathmandu, when it went down about one mile from the Jomsom Airport.
Officials say six people – a Nepali flight attendant, two Indian children, an Indian man, and a Danish man and woman – survived the crash and were taken by helicopter to nearby to the Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Pokhara. They are all listed in serious or critical condition. The dead include 13 Indian tourists and two Nepali pilots
Local authorities say it appears the aircraft had technical problems and was unable to land. The pilot was apparently turning around to return to Pokhara when the plane crashed. It broke apart upon impact, but did not catch fire. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
