PepsiCo Inc.'s plans to buy its two largest U.S. bottlers may be advertised as a cost-savings to put some sparkle in its North American business, but it's about more than just streamlining operations.

The quarterly results show overseas beverage sales growing gradually, the U.S. market remains in the same problem, and the beverage volume fell 6% in North America in the latest quarter.

That decline reflects factors like the recession, a shift away from carbonated sugar drinks to bottled waters and other alternatives and the increasing consumer acceptance of generic house brand colas and sodas.
