The Iraqi government has announced they will be removing the blast walls that have been placed around the capital city of Baghdad. According to the government the walls will be coming down over the next 40 days, a sign that the security situation inside the city has improved.
At least that’s the sign that the government would like to portray as it tries to instill as sense of control within the city. While those blast walls had caused problems with traffic and divided the city they also served to protect residents from sectarian violence.
It has been just over a month since American troops left the city and many residents fear the dismantling of the walls will only lead to an increase in attacks.
