William Bratton to Step Down as Head of LAPD

William Bratton has announced that he will step down as head of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), ending his tenure in a post he has held since being appointed by Mayor of Los Angeles James Hahn in October 2002.

Bratton was reappointed to a second five-year term in 2007 and there had already been talk about an amendment to the City Charter that would have enabled him to serve a third term.

The 61-year-old Bratton has been credited with restoring the LAPD’s reputation and significantly reducing crime within the city. He will continue to serve as Police Chief until October 31, 2009 at which time he will move to New York where he will take a position with a private international security firm.
