Assassination Attempt In Colombia Leaves 5 Dead, 19 Wounded

A failed assassination attempt on a former Colombian minister Tuesday morning left at least five people dead and nineteen others injured. President Juan Manuel Santos said a bomb detonated on a crowded street in the capital, Bogota, was meant to kill ex Minister of Interior and Justice Fernando Londono. Londono, who was traveling in a black SUV at the time of the explosion, survived with minor wounds, but two of his bodyguards were killed.

"This government will not be put off course by these terrorist attacks. I want to condemn this in the strongest terms,” President Santos said.

Londono is currently in stable condition at Clinica del Country. The motive for the attack is unclear. Londono served under President Alvaro Uribe from 2002 to 2004.

The explosion was likely the work of the leftist guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
