BCS Rankings for week ending November 18
It is looking like the BCS Championship will be a familiar scene. After Saturday’s classic between Ohio State and Michigan ended in a 42-39 Buckeyes victory the BCS seems to believe a rematch is in order.
Michigan’s ability to come back in the second half and avoid a blowout loss against Ohio State may have afforded them the opportunity to meet the Buckeyes on January 8 for the BCS Championship in Glendale, Arizona.
After trailing by 14 at the half the Wolverines chances of a National Championship looked slim, but their second half surge provided enough evidence to voters and computers that they were the second best team in the country, just not as convincingly as in the past week. Michigan is the BCS number two by the narrowest of margins, squeezing out a .075 advantage over number three USC.
Although Michigan holds the advantage at this point USC still controls their destiny in many people’s eyes. With games remaining against Notre Dame and UCLA the Trojans could jump ahead of the Wolverines to reach the BCS Championship game. If they can win convincingly over those two teams USC could find themselves playing for the title for the third straight year.
Florida will make their case known if they can finish of their season strong. They still have arch rival Florida State and then a date with Arkansas for the SEC Championship to place on their resume. Winning those two games could push them higher in voter’s ballots.
Michigan’s loss on Saturday all but ended Notre Dame’s chances of playing for the National Championship but a big win over USC could help their cause. The Irish were hammered by Michigan earlier in the year so the likelihood of them jumping ahead of the Wolverines is slim.
Arkansas remained at number six in the BCS Rankings after their 14 point victory on Saturday. They will be playing a big game next week against LSU before playing Florida in the SEC Championship in Atlanta.
