Chuck Brown, a guitarist and singer who is often credited with the creation go-go music in Washington, D.C. in the mid 70s, has died. According to reports, Brown passed away Wednesday at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University Hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia and sepsis. He was 75.
"Go-go is D.C.'s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music, and Chuck Brown was regarded as Go-go's creator and, arguably, its most legendary artist. Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over, but especially in the District of Columbia. Without Chuck Brown, the world –- and our city –- will be a different place. What a loss!" said Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray.
Brown began his music career playing guitar for Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm and Los Latinos in the early to mid 60s. He later formed his own band, The Soul Searchers, and produced the smash hit “Bustin’ Loose.” The song, which spent four weeks at the top of R&B charts in 1979, became the home run song for the Washington Nationals baseball team. Brown was a driving force behind go-go music and influenced other bands in the genre. He is known as the “godfather of go-go.”
