Beginning in February, 2007 the U.S. Mint will begin circulating dollar coins depicting former U.S. presidents. George Washington will be the first president to have his image placed on the new coins and he will be succeeded by John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The plans call for a new president to appear on the dollar coin every three months. The order in which the presidents are introduced will be based on their dates in office.
Each dollar coin will be the same size as the Sacagawea dollar, slightly larger than a quarter, but will feature a larger image. The new coins will place the traditional wording found on current coins along the edge of the new dollar.
The U.S. Mint is hoping that the new presidential dollar coin is accepted in the same fashion as the state quarters that wee introduced in 1999.
While the U.S. Mint is hoping for public acceptance they are prepared to continue printing the dollar bill. This despite the fact that they could save over $500 million in printing costs if the bill was replaced by the coin.
