Some Heroin Junkies Struggle For Life, Narconon Drug Rehab Looks at Why

Vancouver offers different social programs to help combat this problem

Vancouver British Columbia’s downtown east-side provides many different detox and prevention programs to help the thousands of addicts whom reside there.  Many critics argue that more long term funding is needed, as well as more facilities; however, according to health officials, where to put them is important.  Several treatment and detox centers are located in the center of one of the biggest drug markets in Canada.  For many heroin addicts living in the downtown east-side, this can actually make it quite difficult to get over their addiction permanently.  The primary reason is, because those who go through these detox programs are released right into the hands of drug dealers, which significantly increases the difficulty any recovering addict will have at transitioning successfully into the everyday world.  Vancouver offers different social programs to help combat this problem, but unfortunately with such a large amount of people looking for help, not everybody receives the services needed.

A study published by the British Columbia Center for Excellence in HIV/AIDS indicated that when many intravenous users left the downtown east-side and were able to find steady housing and a job, they were less likely to go back to using drugs and less likely to contract HIV.  “This is one of the most important parts of recovery; to be able to start being productive when you complete a program,” said Nick Hayes, a representative the Canadian Narconon drug rehab. “For many recovering addicts it can be very difficult to stay clean when there is nothing to do.  When they are in a treatment program, there is structure and daily routines. When they leave a program; however, it is very important that they follow through with getting productive.”

In a Treadmill Addiction study, 59% of addicts said if any treatment were available they would take it.  65% of these people indicated that these facilities should be located outside of Vancouver.  For more information contact the Narconon drug rehab program at, 1-877-782-7409, or visit the website at, http://narconon.ca/
