U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Issues Threat of Military Action Against Eritrea

One day after arriving in Kenya as part her 11-day visit to the African continent U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a stern warning to Eritrea, threatening military action against the country if it did not stop supporting militants in Somalia.

Clinton has spent the day speaking with Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and those discussion centered around the difficulty his country is having in fending off Islamist militants who are attempting to overthrow the government. Somalia has long blamed Eritrea for supporting those militants, specifically al-Shabab, yet the neighboring country has denied the accusations.

Despite their denials Eritrea was still targeted by Clinton who insisted “It is long past time for Eritrea to cease and desist its support of al-Shabab and to start being a productive rather than a destabilizing neighbor.” Clinton went on to warn, “We are making it very clear that their actions are unacceptable. We intend to take action if they do not cease.’

That threat was justified according to Clinton due to the danger al-Shabab would present to the United States if they were able to obtain a haven in Somalia.

Clinton’s trip will take her to Angola, Cape Verde, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Nigeria and South Africa.
