Sonia Sotomayor Confirmed to U.S. Supreme Court Following Senate Vote

Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court following a Senate vote of 68-31 on Thursday afternoon.

Sotomayor, 55, will become the country’s first Hispanic Supreme Court justice when she is sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts on Saturday. Sotomayor will be replacing the retiring liberal justice David Souter.

The confirmation of Sotomayor was widely expected in the Democratic-led Senate as she collected 59 votes from Democrats and nine Republican votes; she needed just 50 for confirmation.
