Authorities hauled 4 tons of marijuana from the ocean off Southern California Sunday after receiving a tip from a boater around noon. No one has been arrested in connection with the drugs.
Lt. Joe Balicki of the Orange County Sheriff's Department confirms 160 bales of marijuana were recovered from the Pacific Ocean about 13 miles off Dana Point by the Border Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard and the sheriff's office. No boats or people were found at the scene and it remains unclear why the drugs were dumped.
"At other events, they've dumped the bales to get rid of weight if they're being chased. Generally in these cases we're aware they're being dumped. What's more unusual is that the bales were floating with no boat in sight," Border Patrol spokesman Michael Jimenez said.
The bales are estimated to have a street value of $3.6 million.
