Opening up to People magazine about the adoption of her 2-year-old daughter Lukensia, Jillian Michaels says she first “felt the calling to adopt” in her mid-thirties. The fitness guru’s wish came true earlier this month when Lukensia’s adoption was finalized and she was allowed to bring the toddler home from Haiti.
“Adoption is a calling,” Michaels, 38, says. “There is something in you that can’t be denied. You just know in the deepest part of your being that you are meant to find this little soul and guide them through life.”
“The adoption process was not a simple or easy one. There were moments where I was starting to think it was not going to work out,” she admits.
Michaels says going through the process became worth it when Lukensia arrived in the United States. “That moment of getting Lu out of Haiti and the wheels of the plane touching down in New York … she was an American citizen after two years. It was a heavy moment,” Michaels tells People.
Lukensia is not the only child Michaels welcomed this month. The former Biggest Loser trainer’s partner Heidi Rhoades gave birth to their son Phoenix on May 3.
