Ford Motor Co. on Thursday laid out plans to slash structural costs but still replace or refresh up to 90% of its cars by 2012 in a bid to shape a more global and fuel-efficient future. "As we reduce costs, manage cash and increasingly leverage our 'One Ford' global product plan, our critical priority is protecting and enhancing our new vehicle pipeline," CFO Lewis Booth said in a speech in Traverse City, Mich.

The company's "One Ford" plan calls for fewer but higher-volume platforms on which several models can be built, developing more vehicles such as the Fiesta and Focus that take aim at a global market, and using more interchangeable parts among its models. Ford is also looking to cut the age of its product portfolio by 20% within five years.
