Sierraware, the embedded virtualization company, today announced that it had launched the first open source implementation for ARM TrustZone. Open Virtualization, an open source project sponsored and maintained by Sierraware, allows ARM-based microprocessor designers, device manufacturers, and software companies to support ARM TrustZone technology.
TrustZone hardware security extensions provide a system-wide approach to building security into embedded devices. With TrustZone, sensitive data and applications can run in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), completely protected from unknown and potentially dangerous third party software. TrustZone offers a secure virtual world for applications like secure payment, authentication, encryption key storage, digital rights management (DRM), license management, and more. With TrustZone, data is safe from malware and rootkits that can compromise critical data.
Open Virtualization is a free, open source SDK available under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It adheres to technical specifications set forth by GlobalPlatform. Any ARM-based device that supports ARM TrustZone technology, including ARM-11, Cortex-A9, and Cortex-A15 systems, can benefit from Open Virtualization code. It features a small footprint that minimizes memory and system overhead.
“Many ODMs, including manufacturers of set-top boxes, smart phones, and residential gateways, want to leverage ARM TrustZone technology. However, the high cost of developing and supporting it has prevented mainstream adoption,” said Gopu Subramanian, CTO of Sierraware. “Open Virtualization offers a cost-effective option to quickly integrate ARM TrustZone technology into their devices."
Open Virtualization source code is available now for download at: http://www.openvirtualization.org.
