Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins took home the MVP hardware after voters from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America awarded him 320 points while New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter finished with 306 points.
Morneau, who received 15 first-place votes, hit .324, 34 homers, and drove in 130 runs for the Twins. He becomes just the second Canadian-born player to win the MVP.
Jeter finished second in the balloting while receiving 12 first-place votes t cap off the 10th closest race in AL MVP history. The Yankee leader hit .344 with 14 homeruns and 97 RBI’s.
Boston Red Sox big man David Ortiz finished third in the balloting with 193 points.
The Twins were well represented in voting. Catcher Joe Mauer finished sixth in the balloting after leading the AL in batting and pitcher Johan Santana finished seventh and picked up a first-place vote.
