Trill Entertainment rapper Lil Phat, who rose to fame in 2008 after being featured on Lil Webbie’s hit single “Independent,” died Thursday in a shooting outside an Atlanta area hospital. A spokesman for the Sandy Springs Police Department says investigators are looking for "two black males ... seen running from the location at the time of the shooting."
Authorities say Lil Phat was sitting in a car parked in a parking deck next to Northside Hospital Women’s Center when he was shot multiple times around 6:30 p.m. The 19-year-old, whose real name is Melvin Vernell III, was rushed to Northside Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Lil Webbie tweeted about Vernell’s death Friday morning. “RIP TO MY LIL BROTHER PHAT! LIFE SO F--KED UP! TRILL4LIFE. YOU STUPID BITCHES THINK DEATH A JOKE UNTIL YOU LOSE SOMEBODY YOU LOVE! #RIPLILPHAT,” he wrote.
In addition to Webbie, Vernell frequently worked with Lil Boosie and Lil Trill.
