An unmanned Navy aircraft crashed in Maryland during a training flight Monday. Navy officials confirm personnel lost contact with the RQ-4A Global Hawk drone from Patuxent River Naval Air Station shortly after noon. A piloted aircraft was sent to investigate and the crash site was located in a marshy area near Bloodworth Island. No one was injured and no civilian property was damaged.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the crash site was cordoned off for the Navy to investigate. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
The drone was part of the Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons Program at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The 44-foot, 25,600 lb. aircraft is manufactured by Northrop-Grumman. The drones are said to cost $176 million each.
