Gone with the Wind star Ann Rutherford passed away this week at the age of 94. Her close friend and fellow actress Anne Jeffreys tells the Los Angeles Times Rutherford had been battling heart problems. She died Monday at her Beverly Hills home. Rutherford is survived by a daughter and two grandsons. No other details were released.
Rutherford got her start as a radio actress. Her first movie role came in 1935 in Waterfront Lady. Rutherford went on to star opposite Gene Autry and John Wayne in numerous western films. From 1937 to 1942 she starred alongside Mickey Rooney in the Andy Hardy film series. Rutherford is best known for playing Scarlett O’Hara’s sister Carreen in 1939’s Gone with the Wind, which starred Vivien Leigh as Scarlett and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. With Rutherford’s death, the last surviving cast members of Gone with the Wind are Olivia de Havilland, Alicia Rhett, Mary Anderson and Mickey Kuhn.
Rutherford was married twice. She wed first husband David May in 1942 and gave birth to daughter Gloria a year later. Rutherford divorced May in 1953 and wed actor/producer William Dozier. She remained married to Dozier until his death in 1991.
