Not to be outdone, Cigars International has launched its own ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program. Given the mixed response of the government incentive program, CI’s program tailored to handmade cigars has been hailed by observers as a potential economic boon.
CI representative Brandon Searfoss explains, “It’s quite simple: customers send us cash and we send them “Clunker” cigars. Customers can then smoke these Clunkers and we can use the cash to buy more coffee and paper clips around the office. It’s ingenious if you think about it! While it’s true these Clunker brands may not be Rocky Patel or Cohiba quality cigars, they are fairly decent handmades. Plus, unlike unsightly AMC Pacers or bondo’d Dodge Valiants, you can actually destroy these Clunkers by slowly burning them….one at a time.”
The Cigar Clunkers include marginal, barely smokeable players such as Havana Night Club, Vieja Hacienda, Duque and more. With price tags starting at 80-cents per cigar, these handmades may be better suited for Joe the Plumber than for Thurston Wainwright III and other country club swells, that much is true. But with SCHIP taxes, most brands contain 40-cents per cigar in excise tax alone, making the Clunker price tag all the more compelling. Besides, all of the Clunkers are handmade and most are serviceable (some are reported to actually be tasty).
When asked to describe the general quality of the Clunker brands, CI staffer Tommy June remarked, “Well, there was this one gentleman from South Dakota and a palate-challenged fellow from Duluth, Iowa….and come to think of it another guy from Bowie, Maryland, that stated they could actually stomach lighting up one of these brands. In my mind those three guys clearly constitute the tip of the spear, a veritable groundswell of support if you will, for these brands. Seems pretty conclusive to me.”
