Stocks are rising in early trading after a new report showed job losses were less than anticipated and the unemployment rate unexpectedly dipped.

In the latest sign the economy could be recovering faster than expected, the Labor Department says companies shed 247,000 jobs in July. Economists had expected 320,000 job cuts.

The unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent from 9.5 percent in June. Economists forecast the rate would rise to 9.6 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 77.76, or 0.8 percent, at 9,334.02. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 8.91, or 0.9 percent, at 1,005.99, while the Nasdaq composite index is up 23.63, or 1.2 percent, at 1,996.79.
