Britney Spears make surprise visit as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Eyed Peas, and Kelly Clarkson rule the American Music Awards

It was a night of surprises at the American Music Awards in L.A. While the singers and bands who took home the hardware weren’t shocking, some of the performances and appearances that took place in the Shrine Auditorium were.

The newly single Britney Spears came on stage to present Mary J. Blige with the award for female soul/rhythm & blues artist.

Spears’ ex, Kevin Federline was not in attendance but he was the subject of host Jimmy Kimmel’s opening joke, calling Fed-Ex the first “no hit wonder.”

The American Music Awards also saw the return of Lionel Richie who was brought on stage by daughter Nicole Richie. The former member of The Commodores belted out a medley of ‘80’s classics.

As for the awards, Red Hot Chili Peppers were named favorite alternative artist and favorite pop/rock group. The group, currently in London, accepted the award via satellite

The Black Eyed Peas snagged three awards for favorite group in the rap hip hop genre as well as the soul/rhythm & blues category. They also picked up an award for best album for "Monkey Business." The Black Eyed Peas are currently in Costa Rica, but like the Chili Peppers, accepted via satellite.

Among the performers at this year’s American Music Awards were Beyonce, who started the show off with her single “Irreplaceable”, The Pussycat Dolls, Gwen Stefani, Jay Z, Nelly Furtado, and Barry Manilow.

Kelly Clarkson grabbed the trophy for pop/rock female and adult contemporary artist. The Rascal Flatts, who picked up several awards at the Country Music Awards earlier this year, won favorite country group as well as the T-Mobile Text-In award. Faith Hill was named favorite female artist and her husband, Tim McGraw took home the favorite album award for his “Greatest Hits Volume 2.” Carrie Underwood continues to rise from her American Idol win, being named favorite new breakthrough artist.

Jamie Foxx nabbed the award for favorite male soul/rhythm & blues artist.
 
Rock band, Nickelback won the award for pop/rock album, and Jamaican born Sean Paul was given the award as best male artist in the same category. Shakira was named favorite Latin artist and Eminem won for favorite male rap/hip-hop artist.
