A U.S. missile strike on a house in Pakistan’s South Waziristan on Wednesday is believed to have killed Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud. According to the BBC Mehsud’s death was reportedly confirmed by an aide to the leader. Mehsud was said to have been buried in the nearby village of Nardusai on Thursday.
In addition to Mehsud’s aide confirming the death there have been a number of people living close to the scene that have said the leader and his wife were killed in the drone attack.
While the U.S. has stopped short of confirming Mehsud’s death a spokesman for President Barack Obama did state, “There seems to be a growing consensus among credible observers that he is indeed dead.”
Rather than rely on DNA evidence to confirm Mehsud’s death the U.S. has said they will look to communication intercepts as a means of gathering information about the situation.
Mehsud was believed to be responsible for a series of terrorist attacks inside Pakistan including the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
