College Basketball Recruiting: Dominique Ferguson, Top 10 Prospect, Commits to FIU

Dominique Ferguson, the five-star high school basketball prospect from Indianapolis, committed Friday to Florida International University and head coach Isiah Thomas.

Ferguson, who once committed to Kentucky, made the surprising decision on Friday. He was considering Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Indiana and UCLA, but FIU was never even listed on his previous lists of schools.

"It's just about the tremendous respect I have for Coach [Isiah] Thomas," Ferguson said to ESPN.com. "Everybody wants to get to the next level and when you make a commitment it's about who you think can get you there. A lot of coaches can and do, but he's been there."

The 6-foot-8 senior forward will also transfer from Lawrence North H.S. in Indianapolis to basketball prep school powerhouse Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA.

Ferguson, who starred at Lawrence North his previous three seasons, was expected to be the star on a team that is considered one of the top teams in the nation. In addition to Ferguson, Lawrence North stars senior guard Justin Martin (No. 80 in Rivals250), junior center Michael Chandler (No. 17) and junior guard Ryan Taylor (No. 43).

Ferguson becomes the first person to de-commit from Kentucky since John Calipari has taken the helm at UK. He also becomes the first five-star prospect in Thomas’ college coaching career.

Ferguson is ranked the No. 8 player in the nation by ESPN and No. 23 by Rivals.
