Sunni Insurgents Kill 146 After Six Car Bombs Rip Through Shi’ite Stronghold

In the bloodiest attack sine the U.S. invasion, 146 people were killed in Baghdad when six car bombs detonated and ripped through Sadr city. At least 268 people were injured in the blasts.

Fearing further violence, authorities have imposed a curfew on the city.

The vehicles had been parked in high traffic areas around markets and streets and left the ground littered with bodies. While Sadr City had been left relatively unscathed since U.S. occupation, the past few months have seen a rise in violence.

There were reports that a seventh car packed with explosives had been stopped by area residents.

According to the United Nations more than 3,700 civilians were killed in the month of October.

There has been pressure from Washington, calling for an end to the sectarian violence brought on by Shi’ite and Sunni militants.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who has vowed to disband militias loyal to many of his allies, is scheduled to meet U.S. President George Bush in Jordan.
