Sonia Sotomayor Sworn In as Supreme Court Justice

Sonia Sotomayor has been sworn in as Supreme Court justice, making the 55-year-old the first Hispanic to sit on the highest court in the United States and just the third woman to ever hold the life-time position.

Sotomayor, who was confirmed following a 68-31 vote by the Senate on Thursday, was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts in a brief ceremony on Saturday. As part of the swearing-in Sotomayor pledged to “faithfully and impartially” fulfill her duties.

Sotomayor will be taking the place of retiring Justice David Souter on the nine-member court. Souter was considered a liberal justice as is Sotomayor so no real shift in the ideological balance of the court will take place.
