The Hostage situation in on Chicago’s South Side has ended with the death of one hostage and the apparent gunman.
The 23-hour standoff began early Thursday when an armed man took a young woman hostage inside his apartment building. The 22-year-old woman had been a neighbor of the gunman.
Police had been trying to negotiate with the man throughout the day on Thursday but the man was unresponsive. Police allowed the gunman’s sister to speak with her brother in an attempt to end the standoff and that proved unsuccessful as well.
Members of the police SWAT team had stormed the apartment just past 1 a.m. on Friday after hearing a gunshot.
Upon entering the apartment they found the gunman and young woman gravely wounded. They were rushed to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
Early reports had indicated that there had been a second hostage that may have escaped but police have not confirmed those beliefs.
