Typhoon Morakot struck China’s southeast coast on Sunday, devastating farmland and destroying homes and buildings in Fujian province.
More than one million people had been evacuated from areas lying in the path of the typhoon and flights had been cancelled as well as ships called ashore.
As heavy rains and winds up to 74 mph pounded the coast several homes and buildings quickly collapsed, trees were uprooted and streets were turned into strong rivers. At least one death has been reported due to a building collapse and rescue crews are still searching the hardest hit areas for more victims.
Typhoon Morakot had already left parts of Taiwan in ruin on Saturday, causing an entire hotel building to collapse after the heavily saturated ground could no longer support the foundation. At least three people have been reported dead while several more have been listed as missing.
