The #5 Arkansas Razorbacks’ dreams of playing for the BCS Championship ended on Friday after falling to the #9 LSU Tigers 31-26. LSU capitalized off of a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Trindon Holliday and a solid performance from quarterback JaMarcus Russell to upend the Razorbacks. Russell completed 14 of 22 passes for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Razorbacks were led by Heisman hopeful Darren McFadden who rushed for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns. While McFadden’s performance was brilliant, quarterback Casey Dick’s was equally awful. Dick completed just 3 of 17 passes for 29 yards and was intercepted once.
While Arkansas has already locked up the SEC West and punched their ticket to the SEC Championship Game against Florida, they had an outside shot at playing for the BCS Championship on January 8. The loss cost them that chance but a victory over Florida on Dec 2 will still send them to the Sugar Bowl.
It looked as if Arkansas had a chance to climb back into the game after McFadden took a handoff on the Razorbacks first possession of the fourth quarter and scored on an 80-yard run. Cutting the LSU lead to 24-19 it appeared as if they had gained momentum only to watch Holliday take the ensuing kickoff 92-yards for a touchdown and a 31-19 lead.
