Eric Staal, Miroslav Satan, Dany Heatley, and Martin St. Louis lead their teams to wins in Friday’s NHL games.
Eric Staal recorded his 14th goal of the season with just under two minutes remaining in the first period and the Carolina Hurricanes (13-9-3) built a 3-0 lead before cruising past the Boston Bruins (9-9-2) 5-1. The win snapped a two game losing streak for Carolina. John Grahame stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced in goal.
Mike Richards scored the go-ahead goal for Philadelphia (6-14-3) two minutes into the third period and the Flyers held on to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-14-2) 3-2. The Flyers also got a goal and an assist from both Peter Forsberg and Freddy Meyer. Antero Niittymaki stopped 39 shots mining the net for Philly. Columbus managed to get off 19 more shots than Philadelphia.
The NY Islanders (11-7-3) had Satan on their side Friday. Miroslav Satan assisted on the Islanders first goal and added a goal of his own in the third period to lead NY past the Pittsburgh Penguins (10-8-3) 3-1. Rick DiPietro was strong between the posts stopping 36 shots off the Penguins sticks. Pittsburgh’s lone goal came from Evgeni Malkin.
Niklas Backstrom stopped all 28 shots he faced and Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored a goal and an assist as the Minnesota Wild (13-8-1) shut out the Phoenix Coyotes (7-15-0) 4-0. The Wild got a short handed goal from Pascal Dupuis in the second period. Minnesota took advantage of Phoenix’s six penalties with two power play goals on the night.
The Anaheim Ducks (16-2-6) continued their unbelievable run with a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils (12-8-1). Todd Marchant scored a short handed goal in the third period to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead and then he followed that up with an empty netter to lock up the home win.
The Toronto Maple Leafs (13-7-4) embarrassed the Washington Capitals (8-8-6) 7-1 at the MCI Center in Washington. Jeff O'Neill scored a power play goal and added two assists while Darcy Tucker netted his 16th goal of the year and had two assists of his own. Toronto had three power play goals on the night and Andrew Raycroft stopped 22 shots for the Leafs. Washington’s only goal came off the stick of Alexander Ovechkin.
Petr Cajanek scored two goals and Martin Rucinsky and Doug Weight scored in the shootout as the St. Louis Blues (7-11-3) were able to beat the Detroit Red Wings (12-5-4) 3-2. Nicklas Lidstrom scored the tying goal for the Wings in the third period but Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek was beaten twice in the shoot out phase. Dallas Drake assisted on both of Cajanek’s goals for the Blues.
Dany Heatley waited until the last minute but found the back of the net in the third period to record his hat trick and lead the Ottawa Senators (11-11-1) past the Florida Panthers (8-12-4) 6-4. With the score tied 4-4 in the third period Jason Spezza scored a power play goal to give the Senators the one goal advantage. Heatley, who assisted on the Spezza goal, followed with his third goal of the game. Gary Roberts had two goals and an assist for the Panthers.
Sheldon Souray scored with one second remaining in overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens (13-5-3) over the Buffalo Sabres (18-3-2) 2-1. Saku Koivu scored the tying goal for the Canadiens 8 ½ minutes into the third period to force extra time. Cristobal Huet stopped 29 shots for Montreal.
The Tampa Bay Lightning (12-10-1) overcame a two goal deficit to beat the Atlanta Thrashers (13-7-4) 3-2 in overtime. Dan Boyle scored the Lightning’s first goal in the second period and then forced the overtime frame when he scored with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Martin St. Louis then scored the winner 2 ½ minutes into extra time.
The Dallas Stars (16-6-0) scored three power play goals in the first period en route to their 5-3 victory of the LA Kings (7-13-4). Philippe Boucher recorded a hat trick for the Stars, all three goals coming on the power play. Four of the Stars goals came from the power play, their fifth came on an empty netter. Eric Lindros had three assists in the Stars win.
The Edmonton Oilers (13-8-1) captured their fifth straight win after defeating the Chicago Blackhawks (7-12-2) 5-1. Edmonton jumped on the Hawks with three goals in the first period. Marty Reasoner had a goal and an assist in the win while Petr Sykora equaled his teammate’s feat. Dwayne Roloson stopped 27 shots in goal for the Oilers.
