A young woman identified as Manju Kunwar was beheaded by her father Tuesday in the northern India state of Rajasthan after he accused her of “indecent behavior.” Authorities say 46-year-old Oghad Singh, a marble miner in the village of Dengar Ka Guda, cut Kunwar’s head off with a ceremonial sword because he felt she was dishonoring the family by associating with several men. Singh paraded the severed head around the village before a relative convinced him to turn himself in to police.
Officer Ranjit Singh said Oghad was still holding Kunwar’s head and the bloody sword when he walked into the police station. "It was a ghastly sight. Oghad admitted immediately that he killed his daughter because she had earned a bad name for the family,” officer Singh said.
Oghad has been charged with murder. Police say he remains unrepentant for his daughter’s death.
In accordance with Hindu tradition, Kunwar’s body was wrapped in muslin and cremated on a funeral pyre.
Police say Kunwar, who was in her 20s, left her arranged marriage in 2010 and moved in with her parents after divorcing her husband. She eloped with an unidentified man earlier this month, but returned home over the weekend at her father’s request.
