Israeli Jets Bomb Palestinian Smuggling Tunnel

For the first time in nearly two months Israeli jets bombed a smuggling tunnel into Gaza after Palestinians fired mortars near the main crossing from Gaza into Israel in Erez on Sunday.

Israeli military officials have said the bombing of the tunnel was in response to the mortar attacks and that Palestinians have continued to use tunnels as a means of smuggling weapons from Egypt into Gaza.

During a 22-day period in December and January Israeli forces launched an aggressive military campaign in Gaza in an effort to destroy the tunnels yet Hamas militants have still managed to bring in the weapons and carry out attacks.

There were no reports of injuries in Sunday’s mortar attacks or Monday’s response by Israeli military.
