LAKEVILLE, PRIOR LAKE AND SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA - The amount of preschoolers visiting their family dentist with cavities is on the rise for the first time in 40 years.
"There are different reasons that could contribute to this issue," said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, one of Minneapolis orthodontists and Lakeville children's orthodontics provider. "Bottled water is considered one of the culprits."
Even though bottled water is better for children's oral health than the sugar-filled sports, energy and soft drinks, it causes decay because it does not contain as much fluoride as tap water.
A study in a journal titled "Pediatric Dentistry" was published in 2009 and discovered 69 percent of parents observed in the study gave their children bottled water exclusively or with tap water.
Many brands of bottled water lack the optimum levels of fluoride essential to good oral health. This newfound issue is especially important for children 8 years old and younger because their teeth are still developing.
Despite using a home water filter system instead of bottled water, children risk developing cavities. Water treatment systems reduce the amount of fluoride in tap water.
"Do not think that because parents are giving their kids bottled water to drink that their kids are not getting the fluoride they need," said the St. Paul invisible braces provider. "There are measures parents can take to ensure their and their children's teeth are protected from decay."
There are many fluoride toothpastes, rinses and dietary supplements on the market, and dentists are offering in-office fluoride treatments that only take a few minutes to complete.
Frequent snacking, consuming sugary beverages and a lack of knowledge on parents' parts regarding the American Dental Association's recommendations about children's dental visits that cause the increase in children getting cavities.
Parents can instill in their children good dental care habits by helping their children brush their teeth twice a day and providing them with fluoride-containing beverages and food. This way they are less likely to develop cavities and be forced to undergo extensive dental procedures.
