Afghan officials have confirmed at least 3 NATO soldiers were among the 21 people killed in a suicide attack in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday. All three soldiers are reportedly Americans.
The attack targeted a checkpoint operated by NATO and Afghan security forces in Khost City, the capital of Khost province. Authorities say the suicide bomber detonated explosives packed on a motorcycle. In addition to the NATO soldiers the dead included an Afghan interpreter, three police officers and 14 civilians. At least 32 people were wounded in the blast.
The United States Embassy in Kabul called the attack “cowardly” and said the "disregard for the lives of civilians and soldiers further demonstrates that the Taliban and other insurgents indiscriminately continue their murderous campaign against all, including women and children.”
Also on Wednesday, a roadside bomb in Logar province killed 8 civilians. Provincial spokesman Din Mohammad Darwesh said the bomb was planted outside the capital of Puli Alam. Two women and four children were among the dead.
